Overview
"When eighteen-year-old Natalia Avila finally gets her abuela, Carmen, to talk about her life in Havana, she hopes that the formidable former socialite will give her interesting material for her capstone project to increase her chances of getting into Brown University, and secretly, Natalia is also searching for something to validate her identity as a Cuban American. But when Natalia presses Carmen about details that unravel decades-old secrets, Natalia learns more than she bargained for about her own heritage and identity, all while searching for answers in Cuba, and preparing for a salsa dance competition in which she must face her rival Lucia. This submission is an excerpt from La Habanera, a novel about identity, belonging, coming of age, and love, set in Chicago and Havana." -- Abstract
