Overview

"A dystopian, climate-fiction novel set in a world where the dominant resource in society is an organ called a "core" that animals (gods) have evolved to deal with the nuclear fallout and the environmental saturation of radioisotopes and the biomagnification of toxic chemicals. Cores are needed for the preparation of a regenerative drug called "the blessing," which Nemera, a sovereign and ancient god, has shown people how to make. The narrative follows several characters. Soma, a disillusioned twenty-year-old who is questioning the historical systems that dictate society and the concerns of people—while also dealing with ideological differences in her romantic relationship, as well as a mother whose legacy she can't live up to. Carrowe, a recently discharged collector of cores (a hunter), who's decided he'd like to be the one in charge. And Hunger, a dog-sized god of human intelligence, who's close to death and desperately wants to live." -- Abstract
