Overview

"The essays that make up the body of this memoir have been written over the past several years. They are an attempt to make sense of a time when women and children were not protected and were subjected to the supremacy of a patriarchal society that centered and privileged white males. This was not a long-ago time. In my small hometown of Winthrop, Massachusetts in the 1970s, secrets and shame experienced by a family were a family's business. The institutions that were meant to protect and assist its citizens were often filled with people who were also living with secrets and shame. There was nowhere for us to turn for help, so we endured. This memoir in essays is an attempt to break a self-imposed silence. They tell the story of the high emotional, physical, and psychological cost of living through an abusive childhood." -- Abstract
