Scope and Contents

These records contain compact, digital video, and blue ray discs as well as the corresponding digital files collected from Master of Fine Arts students of the Visual and Media Arts Department as part of their graduation requirements. Included in this collection are documentaries, fictional narrative videos, interactive websites, video games, animations, audiobooks, music, and instructional materials. The subjects of the theses are unrestricted and therefore varied and numerous. Paper components submitted with the media components are housed in the Emerson College Iwasaki Library. The Emerson College Archives have collected the media components of the Audio-Visual Theses since 1988, however these records exclusively cover media components collected between 1995 and 2013.

Biographical / Historical

The Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College aims to educate students how to be informed, ethical, creative, and disciplined scholars and practitioners while learning to present ideas and tell stories. The department encourages broad-based learning build on a balance of theory and practice and is dedicated to including the perspectives of many cultures and nations. Students gain an understanding of the social, political, and cultural implications of the visual, media, and sound arts, so that they develop an appreciation of the principles that lead to reasoned and humane outcomes. The Media Art Master of Fine Arts degree is a full-time, three year program.

The Department’s areas of study include Computer Animation, Documentary, Experimental Media, Fiction Narrative, Installation, Interactive Art, and Sound Design. All MFA students are required by the College to submit a Master’s Project to graduate. The work is supervised by a project chair and project committee.

The record group contains both physical disks and corresponding digital file components. Digital components are arranged by Object ID number, which is assigned by order of ingest. The corresponding physical disks are arranged in binders by call number.

Theses deemed unreadable have been marked with an asterisk (*) beside their Object ID.

Theses with unreadable components have been marked with a caret (^) beside their Object ID, and researchers may request their physical disk component.
