Overview

"In the late 20th century, economic strain and a strong cultural bias against females adversely altered China's population and enticed a swell of international adoption by affluent Americans wanting to adopt infant girls. A consequence of such a popular adoption practice was that many adoptees became estranged from the Chinese culture that they were born into and experienced an identity crisis from years of not being considered “American enough” or “Chinese enough” by others. The story Divergent Dreams seeks to raise awareness of the negative psychological impact that adoption had on a Chinese-American adoptee, in spite of being adopted into a wealthy household and to encourage discussions between Chinese, Americans, and interracial adoptees and their families." -- Abstract
