Overview
"Joy, while innate in every child, is often suppressed in the traditional United States school system. The focus of this thesis project is on the decline of joy in the classroom from kindergarten to 8th grade. Through a series of interviews and observations, data was collected based on student and teacher experiences regarding joy in the classroom. A review of literature focusing on the psychology of joy, kindergarten and middle school pedagogy, and Joy-Focused learning experiences was used to analyze and fortify the primary research conducted for this project. This project consisted of an immersive professional development workshop, followed by a group discussion about joy in the classroom, and the effects of different Joy-Focused pedagogy methods in kindergarten and 8th grade educational settings. Based on personal experiences, literary analysis, and an examination of teacher and student perspectives, the data collected represents the importance of Joy-Focused pedagogy at any age." -- Abstract
