Overview
"This thesis is a novel excerpt of a historical fiction-thriller hybrid that utilizes multiple subgenres, including detective fiction, horror, and elements of the Western. The purpose of this work is to successfully showcase a speculative narrative within the confines of historical fiction. As a genre, historical fiction can be considered an unforgiving genre to work within due to the limitations produced by setting and era. Additionally, this genre is often accompanied by the expectation that there will be no departures from reality; the reader may expect the narrative world to closely resemble our own. By placing contrasting elements of the familiar and unfamiliar—post-Civil War America and the supernatural—within one narrative, the reader's expectations of genre conventions are subverted, creating space to explore the boundaries of an unconventional hybrid genre." -- Abstract
