Overview

"This thesis explores threads of identity, weaving together influences that shape the sense of self, including ancestry, childhood, culture, and religion. These themes spread across three sections; "on a loom" is a meditation on interfaith upbringing and the reconciliation of two belief systems, "heirloom" relates to paternal ties, and "bloom" speaks to maternal heritage. The collection highlights two matriarchs and how they lived out their individual cultures (Jewish and Colombian) and faiths (Judaism and Catholicism) in each day. Grief is present in every section, unwinding in its various forms, from losing a loved one to losing oneself. The heart of these poems is longing: a longing for what is lost, a longing to connect, a longing to create. The Braid celebrates tradition and tugs at strict boundaries, searches for faith in the everyday, and questions how two halves can be made whole." -- Abstract
