Scope and Content Note

From the Series:

The series contains Master's theses from 1943 to present. The theses consist of either a production book and a media component or solely a production book. The production books were originally submitted as physical bound copies, but were later submitted digitally. The physical production books are stored offsite and the digital production books are stored in the College's preservation repository.

The media components consist of U-matic tapes, VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays and changed to digital submissions in 2020. There are also a handful of audiocassette tapes and one USB. The media components are stored onsite at the Archives.

Overview

"Since the New York Times Magazine's publication of the 1619 Project in 2019, school administrators, educators, politicians and parents have been in heated discourse about bringing critical race theory (CRT) to K-12 classrooms. However, there is significant research that points to the validity of incorporating elements of CRT in K-12 curriculum, and to the absolute need for White students to investigate the history of whiteness, white privilege, and systemic racism. This thesis project seeks to support the integration of race-based theories in the classroom through piloting an original curriculum unit based on the young adult novel, Punching the Air, by Ibi Zoboi and Yusef Salaam. Through the execution of this five day unit, this project showcases the effectiveness of arts-integrated curriculum as a viable method for facilitating topics around race and privilege in the classroom, and proves students' abilities to navigate these sensitive discussions.
