Overview

"This MFA research study explores the essential pedagogical and methodological components of a critically engaged musical theatre class. The racist roots of musical theatre, coupled with ongoing issues of representation in the industry, present a multitude of challenges for K-12 educators seeking to teach this art form in a more inclusive and relevant way. Critical pedagogy, antiracist educational frameworks and critically oriented approaches to drama education offer educators support in radically reimagining musical theatre education for historically marginalized high school students. Reflexivity and the impact of identity on teaching practice are also discussed. Interviews with musical theatre educators of color revealed the importance of critically examining the musical theatre canon, and of centering the voices, identities and lived experiences of students of color both in the classroom and in extracurricular rehearsal spaces. This document concludes by offering future possibilities for research and for White musical theatre educators' teaching practice." -- Abstract
