Overview

"This thesis project describes the outcomes of a devised theatre project that looked at the similarities and differences in the treatment of girls in education. Interviews, writings, reflections, creative pieces and stories were gathered from over 40 women and girls ranging from age 11 to 92-years-old. The contributing authors and participants reflected on their own schooling, primarily their middle school years, and focused on three concepts: body image, strength/athleticism, and empowerment in school. Eleven women, including this author, were cast in a production that showcased the similarities and differences of girls in school, methods of consent-based learning theatre techniques, and empowering language as an example for change. Outcomes discussed include the process of the play itself during the COVID-19 pandemic, the effect of consent-based language woven into the process and the performance, and the middle school students' understanding of their own agency." -- Abstract
