Overview

"In my thesis film, Inheritance, I sought to highlight the dysfunction that exists in most families, specifically, the way in which toxic behaviors have a tendency to be passed down, or inherited, from parents to their children. The story centers on a 16 year old boy who must navigate his parents' crumbling marriage, at the total expense of experiencing his own childhood. I found this subject matter compelling both because the ideas and themes are rooted in something that is personal to me, but also because they are relatable to most people I have discussed the project with. I think films can be an effective way of presenting mental disorders because they can be expressed through the characters and they can be readily shared and discussed in educational settings and also with larger general audiences. Developing this thesis helped me process some of my own childhood traumas and move beyond them, and my hope is that the film might help others too." -- Abstract
