Overview
"Plume is a postmodern, fragmented novel that takes place across the time period of 2014 to 2035 but is anchored in the months of August – November 2035. In this near-future United States, several smaller religious political parties have replaced the Democratic and Republican parties, and police power has been privatized, allowing corporations to dictate the extent of that power. The central plot of the novel surrounds a new and improved" version of the MKUltra program entitled MKUber, designed to target only "exceptional" people. The central characters are six soon-to-be subjects: Victor Young, Patricia Friedman, Zoe Cunningham, Emily Huang, Oliver Friedman (Patricia's sister), and Patrick Friedman (no relation to Patricia and the implied narrator of the novel), as well as a cop-turned-recruiter named Winston Flanagan. Many of these characters struggle with mental illness, drug abuse, and self-actualization, and their stories converge in a variety of ways." -- Abstract
