Overview
"The purpose of this novel was to focus on one character's three defining life events. For the first section, the protagonist is a memory of his estranged mother. For the second, a shell of a man examined from a distant, analytical perspective. For the third and largest section, he is a fully fleshed-out person displayed over the course of twenty vignettes told through third-person omniscience. The goal was to start with a plain-spoken narration, albeit in transcript form to give the most authentic approach for one recounting traumatic experience, then to transition to a distant, intellectualized, and esoteric voice to show the terminal husk this protagonist occupies as a homeless alcoholic. And for the third section, these two styles come together to provide the full-fledged nature of who this person is as a high school senior in 2001, right after 9/11." -- Abstract
