Overview

"Mexicans are not a monolith, our stories have always had similar starting points—almost always with the immigrant ancestor(s). What happens to them next can be anyone's guess, but often times their primary goal is survival, though the meaning of survival depends on the family. Writing this collection, I did not presume that it would speak for every Mexican family out there, and each of those stories I haven't excavated contains a unique heart and waits further exploration. In acknowledging these shortcomings, I hoped I could still tell a believable, realistic, and down-to-earth story of a Mexican family, while remembering that many others don't realize their "American Dream." Perhaps some of them they "make it," yes, but perhaps they're still forced to contend with a lot. Perhaps for some time, things don't let up and life rains down hard on them. Perhaps they avoid a wave of misfortune, but someone they care about gets affected instead. Perhaps their happy ending resides in having the luck to recover from a traumatic past under a momentary semblance of peace." -- Abstract
