Overview

"My thesis encompasses the beginning of a memoir exploring my journey with trichotillomania, a psychiatric disorder that causes me to compulsively pull out my hair. Though 1 in 25 people pull out their hair, the disorder remains shrouded in mystery; there is no cure and little treatment. I began plucking when I was eight years old, an event that splintered open my family's carefully controlled, privileged life. For years, I believed I was the only one. I hid under makeup, headscarves, and wigs, crippled by a fear of discovery. Ultimately, my self-hatred brought me to the brink of self-destruction, culminating in a near suicide attempt in college. My memoir charts my struggle to overcome my shame, and to embrace a loving relationship with my now-husband. The underlying questions are, What is the price of keeping secrets? And how can coming out of hiding allow us to heal?" -- Abstract
