Overview
"Sister Roksana, Priestess of Death, recruits Mihaela, innkeeper aspiring to practice magic, to confront a mysterious evil surrounding the fabled city, Death's End. An evil that the city's Lord Mayor, August Bane, and Librarian, Ulyana, accidentally free—a millennia old Queen that once ruled. As their investigations progress the three point of view characters, Roksana, Mihaela, and Ulyana, wrestle with their responsibilities, to the world and to the people they love, and find their faith shaken—in gods, in people, and in themselves. Together, they are able to defeat the Queen, but at the loss of August's life and the blooming love Ulyana shared with him, and, more troubling still, the reappearance of Roksana's longtime love, Ligia, back from the grave. The novel twists popular tropes surrounding necromancy and gothic fantasy with the perspectives of three queer women as they find family and love despite the darkness surrounding them." -- Abstract
