Overview

"Darkpaw is a planned fantasy series set in the anthropomorphic world of Vulpinia and is aimed at both adult and young adult readers. The first book herein is a coming-of-age tale that focuses on the issues of racial prejudice, privilege, and nativism. These are experienced through the eyes of Argento Roughpaw, a war orphan rescued and adopted by Lady Miria Fairmane, general of the Vulpinia Empire. Despite the racism that Argento endures because of his fur color and scent, he rises to become a knight in service to the Empire. His desire to serve and repay Miria is thrown into turmoil when he realizes that the less fortunate are cast down and forgotten while the emperor wages his own war that favors the privileged "pure-bloods." The effects of war on friendships and family are explored as Argento defects to fight against the Empire that raised him to kill his own kind." -- Abstract
