Overview
"A.S.S. Crawler is a half hour comedy set in New York City in 2002. It follows the struggles of Nadia Malik, a queer Muslim female actor, living in post 9/11 America. When a wire transfer sent by her parents from Saudi Arabia gets flagged by the NYPD, Nadia gets picked up for questioning. During the interrogation, Officer Diaz entraps her into working for the NYPD's Arab Secret Surveillance (A.S.S.) Unit to spy on a mosque in Queens. This project is based on real events, and is a commentary on treatment of Arab and South Asian actors by the entertainment industry as well as the NYPD and FBI's constant surveillance of Muslim communities that has been taking place across cities in the United States in some instances since before the "war on terror" began. Southern Haunt is an hour-long dramedy set in a small college town in Hicksville, Mississippi in present day. The show plays with elements of fantasy and supernatural as the story is told through the experiences of Quranic entities called "Jinn". Alisha who belongs to a family of the good kind of Jinn who hunt "bad" Jinn to keep humans safe, returns home to Hicksville after a decade away only to find that her father has been killed, and her teenage half sister, Sarah, has no idea that she is also half Jinn. Alisha and Sarah have to learn to work together to keep the town's people safe from the "bad" Jinn while also learning to get along with each other and their father's ghost. Both A.S.S. Crawler and Southern Haunt are works that seek to comment on female empowerment, gender dynamics between men and women, queer identity, American-Muslim identity, the immigrant experience, and familial bonds." -- Abstract
