Overview
"Duppy and the Dybbuk is a romantic comedy about a young mixed race couple whose love is tested by the supernatural opposition of the ghosts of the lovers' grandmothers. The story deals with themes of assimilation, xenophobia, and the fraught nature of cultural inheritance in modern day America. As the grandmother ghosts attempt to break up the young couple, the lovers must figure out what is going on and grow into better versions of themselves, learning not to entirely discard the past in trying to forge a better future. This particular intergenerational struggle is a manifestation of larger social problems, and the challenge of maintaining specific cultural identities without succumbing to ancient tribalisms. This project caps two years of writing focussed on issues of justice and identity in the United States." -- Abstract
