Overview
"In 2017 Teatr Powszechny invited Oliver Frljić to direct an adaptation of Stanisław Wyspiański's 1899 play, Klątwa. The production was critical of The Polish Catholic Church and included several scenes that angered The conservative Polish government. The production became mired with daily protests, one of which culminated with a protestor attacking an audience member with a liquid corrosive. The conservative government maintains that Klątwa is an attack on Catholics and as of April 2019, The play is under investigation for blasphemy and for inciting The audience to murder. Teatr Powszechny responds that The play is critical of Catholic politics and The Church's over-involvement with Polish government. Frljić's directing background, deeper Themes of The play, and a recent Teatr Powszechny's production all support that it is more accurate to say that Klątwa is critical of nationalism as a whole and an intentional Theatrical response to recent farright government policies." -- Abstract
