Overview

"The main character of Don't Speak is Kelsey Townsend, a sixteen-year-old girl who's struggling to deal with change. Midway through high school, her parents decide to move to another town, and Kelsey has to leave behind her best friend, as well her church, which she's very active in and attached to. After her parent's multiple attempts to get Kelsey to join their new church, she finally volunteers and meets a few teens from her new school. The most important one being Ben Michaelson. He was popular, gorgeous, smart, and athletic. Due to her experience of being of being overlooked, Kelsey is initially surprised by Ben's kindness; ultimately, she's just happy someone notices her. When Kelsey becomes pregnant, she knows that Ben will not be happy, and he proves her right when he suggests that she have an abortion and even helps her do so. Kelsey discards the fetus and is arrested. Prosecutors know that this was not a one-person job, but Kelsey refuses to give Ben's name, falsely believing that they still have a chance at a relationship. Ultimately, after realizing that she and Ben were never truly in love, Kelsey takes a plea deal from the District Attorney, and reveals Ben as the father." -- Abstract
