Overview

"The Sea of Souls is a speculative fiction novel that spans generations of a Gullah-Geechee family. The novel takes place across two timelines, one in the past and the other in the future, and features beings from Gullah folktales and African mythology. Told from the point of view of a grandmother and granddaughter, the novel carries themes of love and female empowerment. At the novel's opening, the grandmother is a teenage girl who lives on an island near Charleston, SC. She is sent on a quest to prevent the destruction of a magical sea guarded by Mami Wata, a water spirit. Kanoni, the granddaughter, lives in the future. She helps Mami Wata protect the Sea of Souls. Now, both must work across time to not only save the Sea of Souls but each other from destruction." -- Abstract
