The Girl Said No
Scope and Contents
This series is comprised of photographs from Gilbert and Sullivan productions. Most of the photographs are of the principal actors in D'Oyly Carte or R.H. Burnside productions, and many are reprints issued as a part of D'Oyly Carte's 75th anniversary tour in 1955. The series also contains photographs of the principal actors from the first productions of the Gondoliers and Iolanthe. Actors featured in these photographs include Dorothy Gill, Catherine Judah, Kathleen Roche, Bob Pitkin, Flo Ames, Peter Pratt, Sydney Granville, Marjorie Eyre, George Grossmith, Courtice Pounds, DeWolf Hopper, Henry Lytton, Isidore Godfrey, Fisher Morgan, Ann Drummond-Grant, Bertha Lewis, Darrell Fancourt, and many others. The subseries "theatre personalities" contains mostly headshots of actors, directors, and conductors associated with companies performing Gilbert and Sullivan operas, along with a few unidentified portraits. Most photographs have numbers written on the back of them which correspond to the original photograph box list, along with any available information about the subject of the photograph. Most photographs are undated. Duplicates of some photographs may be found in a folder in the oversize photograph box.
