1880-1910, 1880-1910
Scope and Contents
This series contains composition books, leather and cloth bound ledgers, paper folders, and three-ring binders with handwritten text. Some pages have been removed from their original binders for preservation purposes. Jackson used envelopes, receipts, and other ephemera to draft his journals. These notes were previously inserted into the journals, but have been placed in separate folders.
The earliest journals of this series were presumably compiled retrospectively. There is a gap in the Boston journal date range from 1908-1913, and another gap in the New York City journal date range from 1910-1961. Jackson arranged the pages of his journals by season, city, theater, and week. He listed the key actors' names for each production. Many of the Boston journals include listings for New York City theaters, other United States theaters, and occasionally Toronto and Montreal theaters. These instances have been noted on the items' folders.
The only journal not created by Jackson is Beatrice Dowd's Majestic journal, which Dowd compiled using information from Jackson's journals.
